The Cincinatti Post has an article highlighting the advantages of prefabricated fireplaces as well as wood, pellet, and gas stoves. Traditional fireplaces are only about 10% efficient; most of the heat ends up rising through the chimney. Newer prefabricated fireplaces as well as various stoves have significantly higher efficiency. As a result, such products have become hard to find as a result of the low temperatures occuring across the US over the past few weeks.

A great alternative for prefab houses has become available in the states just in the past year. The EcoSmart burner is ventless and self contained, so you don’t need to install any flue or run gas lines. It’s a great looking product that uses denatured ethanol as its primary source for fuel, with the only bi-product when in use is carbon dioxide, steam, and heat. Check it out at http://www.ecogreenfire.com and see how easy it is to go green. You really don’t have to compromise looks or heating efficiency (which is 90% by the way) to go green.
