The Chicago Tribune (along with other Tribune Newspapers) is running a thoughtful interview with the author of a book on modern prefabs, Allison Arieff:
Allison Arieff co-authored the book “Prefab” in 2002, chronicling the history of prefabricated houses and mapping the possible future of environmentally responsible modular home design and fabrication.
“When I told people what I was doing, they giggled,” says Arieff, one of the founders of Dwell magazine and its former editor. “Like, why would anybody write a book on this really mundane ugly architecture?”
Since then, the laughable increasingly has become laudable. Arieff recently shared her opinions about the contemporary design movement she dubs “modern prefab.”

SFGate has an interesting article on low cost things ordinary consumers can do to help the environment.
It’s not that it’s not important. For most of us, our homes (not our cars) are where we use the most energy and therefore create the biggest carbon footprint. If we want to avert climate crisis, our society must mainstream eco-friendly building materials, solar and other alternative energies, and highly efficient prefab construction.
But most of us are renting and buying homes that were built by developers who probably didn’t have global warming in mind when they broke ground. And even for those planning a remodel or shopping for a new house today, embracing cutting-edge green building isn’t always affordable.

A few weeks ago, we mentioned the release of the new book, Prefabulous. We asked for a review, and the Realty Times was nice enough to answer, somewhat. The article is more of an update of the trends happening in prefabricated homes. Here is an excerpt:
Strutting her point that prefab is the new fab, Ms. Koones grabs readers’ attention with an introduction to system-built homes illustrated by a jaw-dropping Mediterranean-style mansion located in toney Southampton, New York. Replete with a tile roof, arched doorways and windows, brick and columned accents, and a gorgeous fountain flanked by recessed alcoves for statuary, the stuccoed home looks like it was moved from the hills of Tuscany to New York.

Sheri Koones is out with another book on modern prefabricated homes, titled Prefabulous: The House of Your Dreams Delivered Fresh from the Factory. It was released yesterday; we’d love it if anyone picks up a copy and would like to submit a review.
